How to Apply
You should apply directly to the park that interests
you. All selections for volunteers are made at the
park level because individual needs for assistance
differ for each area. If you are interested in several
parks, send a copy of your application to each. You
might consider including a letter if you feel the ap-
plication does not allow you to provide enough
information about yourself, or if you have questions
about a particular area's program or needs.
If you have questions as to whether particular parks
have volunteer programs, you may wish to contact
the VOLUNTEERS IN PARKS Coordinator in the
appropriate regional office. The addresses are listed
in this brochure.
Living in the Parks
Some parks can provide housing for volunteers.
Others may have none, or may request that volun-
teers provide their own lodging, such as a tent,
trailer, or camper. Volunteers with campers or trail-
ers who are willing to make a commitment of several
weeks or months are often utilized as campground
hosts. If you have questions about what a par-
ticular park can provide, you should contact that
area directly.
The Volunteers in Parks Program
The National Park Service's VOLUNTEERS IN
PARKS (VIP) Program was authorized by Public Law
91-357 enacted in 1970. Through the VIP program,
everyone has an opportunity to participate in the
many and varied activities of the National Park Ser-
vice. Volunteers are accepted without regard to race,
creed, religion, age, sex, color, national origin, or
handicap. The program provides volunteers with COV-
erage for tort liability and work-injury compensation.
Administration
As the Nation's principal conservation agency, the
Department of the Interior has responsibility for
most of our nationally owned public lands and natu-
ral resources. This includes fostering the wisest use
of our land and water resources, protecting our fish
and wildlife, preserving the environmental and cul-
tural values of our national parks and historical
places, and providing for the enjoyment of life
through outdoor recreation. The Department as-
sesses our energy and mineral resources and works
to assure that their development is in the best inter-
ests of all our people. The Department also has a
major responsibility for American Indian reservation
communities and for people who live in island terri-
tories under U.S. administration.
