Cromwell Cove: Chiltern, Scotts Lane, Cromwell Cove, Bar Harbor, Hancock County, ME

"The house, a large Tudor-style structue, was designed to stand on the shore and was barely visible from the garden, which was carved out of the native spruce and birch forest behind the house." The garden was designed for Ambassador and Mrs. Edgar Scott between 1901 and 1912 by Beatrix Farrand (then Jones). "Chiltern was demolished in 1946, and Mrs. Farrand was sad to see it go. She salvaged four elaborately carved cornice sections from the house and transformed them into panels for a small garden at Reef Point, her home nearby. In 1955, when she retired to a new home, called Garland Farm, she brought this fence along and incorporated it into her newand finalgarden, where it survives today" (Chasse, Patrick. "Lessons in Design: Learning From Lost Gardens," Horticulture [Boston, Horticulture Publishing Co.] at Jesup Online Archive [ https://jesuplibrary.historyit.com/public-sites/home/jml-online-archive : accessed 02 August 2025], no date or volume provided).

The carriage house, now operated as an inn, is located on Cromwell Harbor Road, accross Main Street from the residence. In the Bar Harbor Times of 18 April 1946, Fred Savage placed an ad seeking bids to tear down Chiltern.
