After serving as the college’s president for 12 years, Edward Kaelber retired in 1982. He is remembered today as a kind, strong-willed, insightful and visionary leader. His position as president during the college’s opening years was crucial in shaping the character and educational philosophy of the institution, and College of the Atlantic would surely not be the same without the contributions he made over the years.

“Ed Kaelber was an extraordinary educational visionary and pioneer,” Says COA Board of Trustees chairman Phil Moriarty, “College of the Atlantic will be forever indebted to him for his wisdom and leadership in founding and guiding us during our infancy.”

After retiring as president, Kaelber remained involved with the school and the wider community, helping to create the Maine Community Foundation nonprofit. Bill Carpenter, one of COA’s first professors, reflects, ““No one else could have brought us into existence. [Kaelber] challenged us with a vision that we are still striving to carry out.”

Curious about Kaelbers life and legacy? Read through his oral history to learn more about his involvement in COA's creation, his influence on the college's education philsophy and his witty quips for every occasion.
