Whales and Climate Change
The Gulf of Maine is a large body of water in the Northern Atlantic, home to extraordinary marine wildlife. The Gulf of Maine borders on three US states, Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and two Canadian provinces: New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Like the rest of the ocean, the sea temperature in the Gulf has been increasing; however, the Gulf of Maine has been warming three times as fast as the global average in the last 30 years, and in the past 15 years, the Gulf has been rising in temperature 7 times more quickly than the average global warming. The Gulf of Maine is now warming faster than 99% of the world’s oceans. This accelerated temperature rise profoundly affects the thousands of species who live in the Gulf of Maine.
