Heap of love to your and unil all
We left Newport Tuesday morning at 10:30-
stood out of the boy at twelve knots all by ourselves.
The Third Division followed us out in a few
minutes and were visible on the horizon for the
remainder of the day, but as we were independent
of them we did not pay any attention to them.
It was pretty cool Tuesday night and Wednesday,
so the uniform was mode blues
It kept getting warmer all the time and when
we anchored in Bar Harbor at 4 o'cloch yesterday
afternoon it was real warm.
we had to weave in and out among many
little islands all covered solid with fir trees.
we anchored close in to the beach and can
see the little town and beautiful summer
homes plainley. I never saw a fines piece
of scenery in all my life than it is from
our anchorage The little city of Bar Harbor
is right along the sheltered piece of beach
between higher ground on either side, all
density wooded. and rising right behind
the outskirts of the city is a good sized
mountain which spreads out in gradual
descent until it rooches the watersloge.
So you see it forms a natural pocket and
in this lies the city. There are two good seind
islands which form a natural gateway to
the quiet harbor inside. They are of a grayish
shale formation and in epite of the total
obscance of earth the pine and fir trees hang
on to them to the last square fool of space.
There are all binds and descriptions of
summer houses here. Some are modesh
little bungalour with vine clod parches
peaking out from behind the growth of
stubling firs, while others are great
stone mansions with many gables and
Chimneys which denote fireplaces
within and awell groomed lawns of several
acres displacement spriads out green and
tempting to the eye money Fancy hedges line
the drives and walks while flowers
beds of many colored blossoma bend
their beauty to the ocene.
The beach is rough and rocky and only
for a few feet of send between the
rocks and lawns, the nurse girls and
their little charges would be out of luch
for a place to play, But as it is,
they Can be seen all along this sandy
stritch I watched them through a glass
this morning and saw some little ones
just like "chassie "and his brother and
"Sittie".
I dept on the upper bridge and this
morning I woke up with the seen
shining warm and bright on the finest
picture that any one ever saw It was
one of those still clear mornings and
just Cool enough to make the sun feel
pleasant The different shades of green up
the
hill showed sides and the gray spots y roch
that should through all blended together
like a Painting The town was net asleep
and not a thing moved that I saw for
the several minutes that I gayed. Two
little white steamers were trid up
alongside the weather besten old doch,
the fointest showing of smoke curling up
from their stocks. It was even too
early for them you see, for they are
very busy little boats and make several
trips a day between here and Eden,
a larger town somewhere type the Coast.
numerous yochete and fishing craft
lay at anchor behind a home made
breakwater of rough rocks
yes, muggie I never saw anything
quite so- pretty and pleasing in all
could have seen it, and the blue
my life and only wished you
hope which hangs ones the hills, it
looks like when you and me was
down to aunt Deals.
There is a big floch fsea gulls
which are more than glad we come in
here, as they have a great feach after
each each meal hour, flying around
and around the ship and dipping every
now and then to dinty grab a piece of bread
or some other damLis morsel from the
surface 4 the water. They are all
marked alike, white bodies and wings,
with a touch of brown on their necks
and wing tips.
