Introduction
This booklet is based on oral histories associated with the people within its pages. I
want to thank Phil Whitney for imparting his extensive local knowledge to make this
project possible. If you have any suggestions, or improved knowledge about those
within these pages, we urge you to write it in the back portion of this booklet, the
name of the individual and updated information, or information about the individual
that would be of interest to the Historical Society. Thank you!
Notes
Many of the island lobstermen have the job title 'agricultural fisherman'. This is only
because historically many of Cranberry's fishermen would be catching different fish
at different times of year. This would have included lobster, herring, cod, mackerel,
and pogey (for bait only!) to name but a few. They would also have kept small
homestead operations to supplement their incomes. Many of the fish stocks
collapsed in the latter 20th century SO there is a greater emphasis solely on lobstering
today. This terminology was agreed upon by Cranberry islanders knowledgeable on
the history of the island and the fishing here today.
S/O: This booklet uses an acronym of Significant Other to denote relationships that
would most likely have been a marriage of two people. Because we have relationships
that historically would not have been legally noted, and relationships over a life with
more than one partner we decided this word choice was more appropriate for
everyone involved.
The letters in bold are the names of the people in each photograph
The letters in italic are the jobs each individual held throughout their life.
The third line has their house location on the island using the map on the first page
and the fourth line is any information of note, such as other family members.
To determine the houses of each person, a combination of Tax maps, Houses of GCI
map numbers, family names, google maps and Phil Whitney's local knowledge was
used. We did not pinpoint each person perfectly but we hope this gives you an
improved idea of their existence on the island.
