Local usage refers to a populated place known as "Gotts Island" that encompasses Great Gott Island, especially during the short-lived period when there was an island post office (1902-1928). "Located about one-half mile off Mount Desert Island, Great Gott was a thriving fishing community in the 19th century, with two churches, a store, and a post office. Today no one lives there year-round, and the mail boat stops running in mid-September" (Walther, Lynette L. "The Pull of an Island" at Maine Boats [https://maineboats.com/print/issue-134/the-pull-of-an-island : accessed 21 May 2025]).SEE GREAT GOTT ISLAND.
