Historical Context
New path work described in the 1896 BHVIA 7th An. Rpt, "A large amount of work has been done on Sargents Mountain and the paths leading from that system to the Bubbles and Pemetic, Jordan Pond, etc. a particular good path having been run from the Jordan Pond House on the east side of Jordan Pond, through the old carry, and on the south end of Eagle Lake and west slope of Green Mountain, coming out at the toll gate on the Green Mountain carriage road. This path as been especially protected and cut under the direction of the map committee."The 1902 BHVIA 13th An. Rpt. states, "The pole bridges on the Toll House Path were washed out of place during the winter, and all have been replaced. ...as it is one of the most important paths..." In he 1906 BHVIA 17th An. Rpt. Waldron Bates, Chairman of the Committee on Roads and Paths, states, "work done under the supervision of Andrew E. Liscomb.... included... building new stone bridges in the low land along the side of the Toll House Path." The 1907 BHVIA 18th An. Report, Report of Roads and Paths Committee, by Waldron Bates, Chairmanstates that he "made a change in the Toll House Path near the site of the old Toll House to avoid the muddy roadway formerly used as a part of this path."The path is still marked on the 1951 NPS Road and Trail System Plan (part of a master plan).
